A big thank you by the refugees in hunger strike in Chios

After the fire that broke up in Souda camp on June 6th, the hunger strikers decided to stop their hunger strike (on the 21th day at that time), in good faith that the reassurances made by various officials regarding their claims will be implemented. They also say a big thank you to all the people that stand in solidarity with them on their ongoing struggle for a better future. 

In a statement they say:

We would like to thank all the people that stood by us during our struggle, supporting us in every possible way.

We expect from the officials to stand up to their promises and speed up the asylum process.

We expect from the European Union to stand up to it’s values and provide a safe shelter for all of us that have escaped war, poverty and violence.

As addiional info, let us say that the solidarity statement that was launched to gather signatures was signed by 533 people in only a few days, showing the wave of solidarity to these people’s struggle.

Ως κάτοικοι της Χίου και βρισκόμενοι καθημερινά δίπλα στους 2.500 πρόσφυγες που έχουν εγκλωβιστεί στο νησί μας, σας αποστέλλουμε αυτή τη δημόσια επιστολή με σκοπό να σας ενημερώσουμε από πρώτο χέρι για την κατάσταση που επικρατεί και κυρίως για τα αιτήματα των 18 προσφύγων που βρίσκονται σε απεργία πείνας από τις 17 Μαΐου.

News on the health condition of the hunger-strikers (May 25th)

News on the health condition of the hunger-strikers: On Wendesday, 25th of May, 5 person had symptoms of desnutrition with weakness, dizziness, quakes in extremities, but without alarm sings. All people ofcourse have loss of weight while often people are treated by doctors in the camp when they experience difficulties.

More details:

Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario doctors are doing a medical follow-up of the collective that is doing the hunger strike in Souda Camp. Regularly they monitor and register some vital sings, weight and general health status.

A collective of 40 people started the hunger strike the 17th May. SMH started the follow-up the 21st. At that time 20 persons were in huger strike.

In the follow-up the doctors of SMH detect some individuals that had a clear descent of the blood pressure and glucose, for what some of them need medical assistance.

In their last medical examination, 25th May, 5 person had symptoms of desnutrition with weakness, dizziness, quakes in extremities, but without alarm sings.

After being informed about the consequences and risk of their health situation, they decide to continue with the hunger strike.

Τhis page has as only aim to help the struggle of the 27 refugees on hunger strike since May 17th, 2016, on Chios island. They protest against the painful situation and the uncertainty they, and all 2.500 refugees currently on the island, have to deal with every day for more than two months already.

Refugees on Chios island have been living on poor conditions all this period and they have not yet been given not even the basic information about when their asylum application will actually be examined. They have not been informed by anybody in charge about when the asylum interviews wil take place, nor they have any official legal support.

Their demands:

• We want a lawyer to speak in the name of us
• International protection to relocate in other EU countries
• Specific time for interviews appointment

From this page, as well as from the relevant page on facebook, we want to inform about the hunger-striker’s condition, their demands, and to ask for your full support on these peoples’ struggle, that is in fact a struggle for human dignity!

Αυτή η σελίδα θέλει να βοηθήσει τον αγώνα των 27 προσφύγων από τη Συρία και την Παλαιστίνη που αποφάσισαν από τις 17 ΜαΪου 2016 να ξεκινήσουν απεργία πείνας, διαμαρτυρόμενοι για τη βασανιστική αναμονή που βιώνουν οι ίδιοι και 2.500 ακόμα πρόσφυγες εδώ και δύο μήνες στη Χίο – και 9.000 συνολικά στα νησιά του Αιγαίου.

Οι πρόσφυγες στη Χίο ζουν σε υποτυπώδεις συνθήκες εδώ και δύο μήνες, χωρίς ακόμα να τους έχει δοθεί η δυνατότητα να υποβάλλουν αίτηση ασύλου. Δεν τους έχει δοθεί καμιά έγκυρη πληροφόρηση για το πότε θα γίνουν οι σχετικές συνεντεύξεις, ενώ δεν έχουν καμιά επίσημη νομική υποστήριξη.

Οι απεργοί πείνας ζητούν:

• Να τους δοθεί η κατάλληλη νομική υποστήριξη
• Να οριστούν συγκεκριμένες ημερομηνίες που θα εξεταστεί η αίτηση ασύλου
• Να τους δοθεί διεθνή προστασία ώστε να μπορέσουν να μετεγκατασταθούν σε άλλη χώρα της Ευρώπης.
